Reaping the rewards of pedal power

A GROUP of environmental surveyors are practising what they preach by leaving their cars at home and travelling to work by bike.

Philip Wilbourn, CEO of Wilbourn Associates in Sheffield, has signed his company up to the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme which aims to reduce air pollution, ease traffic congestion and promote healthier lifestyles. Introduced as part of a Green Transport Plan, it allows employers to loan bikes and equipment to staff as a tax free benefit.

Keen cyclist Richard Lindsay, who is involved in cycle training in several of the city’s schools, suggested the idea to Philip in a bid to reduce the firm’s carbon footprint. Philip was keen to back the initiative which he describes as a win win situation. “Not only do employees get a bike at a substantial discount but employers get a fitter workforce which leads to better performance and fewer sick days, he explained. “It also helps to promote an alternative transport initiative and demonstrates an employer’s interest in the well-being of the local community and environment. This has been a revelation to me which has been popular with staff.”

Richard and his colleague Philip Gelsthorpe are already biking about ten miles to and from work several times a week and Nick Pickard, who has a 25-mile journey to make, is set to join them in the summer. Philip Wilbourn, who commutes from Doncaster, will also follow suit and hopes to raise money for charity at the same time.

There are a lot of advantages to cycling to work and I can’t see any drawbacks at all,” commented Richard. “It takes me 25 minutes on average but can take up to 40 minutes by car if the traffic is heavy. It saves time and money and reduces the pressure on car parking places as well as having health and environmental benefits.”

And Richard’s preferred mode of transport also proved unexpectedly useful when Wilbourn’s premises were suddenly water-logged during last year’s floods. “We were trapped in the office and several cars were washed away but I eventually managed to escape on the bike and ride home. I had the very strange experience of having the Parkway to myself!”

The scheme is also helping the local economy as Wilbourn employees who didn’t already own a bike have got them from local dealers.

Richard is now keen to encourage more of his workmates to give pedal power a try. ”It’s not a practical option for everyone but I’ve identified the people who might be persuaded and will be targeting them,“ he warned. “We’re a fairly small firm and the take-up rate so far has been about 25 per cent which is quite good. I think more people will be willing to join now that the clocks have gone forward and I’m sure we can double the numbers at least,” he added.
